Frege's distinction between *Sinn* (sense) and *Bedeutung* (reference) is the founding move of analytic philosophy of language.

Two expressions can refer to the same object while having different senses: "the morning star" and "the evening star" both refer to Venus, but they present it differently.

This matters for notes: a [[wikilink]] is a reference. It points. But the *sense* — what the link means in context — depends on the surrounding text.

A link to [[@alice/link-topology]] from a note about graph theory reads differently than the same link from a note about writing practice. Same reference, different sense.
