A city is a hypertext. Every building is a node; every street is a link. The meaning of a place is constituted by what you can reach from it and what can reach it.

Jane Jacobs understood this without the vocabulary: the vitality of a city block comes from its connections — to other blocks, to transit, to density. An isolated block, however well-designed as an object, dies.
