Many social problems are coordination problems: individually rational behavior produces collectively bad outcomes.
The prisoner's dilemma is the canonical form. But real coordination problems are usually more complex: multiple equilibria, asymmetric payoffs, repeated games, reputation effects.
Traffic is a coordination problem. Money is a coordination solution — it solves the double coincidence of wants problem in barter by providing a universally accepted medium.
The interesting question: what mechanisms (norms, institutions, technology) solve which classes of coordination problems? Not all coordination failures need the same fix.
