The pivot is romanticized in startup culture as a bold strategic move. In practice, most pivots are either capitulations (giving up the original thesis without replacing it with anything better) or searches (methodical exploration of the adjacent possible).
Genuine strategic pivots — where you take a hard-won capability and apply it to a dramatically better market — are rare. Instagram pivoting from Burbn (check-in app) to photo sharing is the canonical example, but the success came from recognizing what users were actually doing, not from a strategic epiphany.
The lesson: observe before you pivot. The pivot that works is usually already latent in the data.
