Emergence: properties of a system that are not predictable from its components. Wetness is not a property of H₂O molecules; it emerges at scale. Consciousness (if it is what we think it is) is not a property of neurons.
The strong form of emergence (where the higher-level properties are genuinely irreducible) is philosophically contested. The weak form (where we lack computational resources to predict from components) is uncontroversially real and practically important.
Complexity science studies the conditions under which emergent phenomena arise: edge-of-chaos dynamics, self-organized criticality, power law distributions. The tools exist; the unified theory does not.
